On August 1st, 2025, The Jazz Foundation of West TN hosted the unveiling of the historical marker for hometown musician “Christine Chatman, The Boogie Woogie Queen”. Christine grew up in Jackson, TN, and was one of the eight children of Dr. Eligiah and Josie Bond-Chatman. Josie Bond-Chatman was an educator and also played piano, so the Chatman children grew up with music being played often. Christine started playing piano at a young age, following her older sister Lula Chatman, who was a blues performer. The music she heard on the piano would immediately inspire her to go and play after they finished rehearsal.

Christine’s music career started early in life, and she played multiple instruments during her fantastic career. She performed with her orchestra and recorded with many artists during the “jump blues” era.

The Jazz Foundation of West TN did a fantastic job covering her career with this event, which helped secure funding and placement with the City of Jackson, TN.  There was extensive media coverage of the event and information posted on their website. Please help support The Jazz Foundation of West TN and their efforts to recognize and support local talent and keep live jazz music alive!
